A pass box functions as a barrier between two cleanliness level areas and helps to stop air flow from one area to another while transferring material. It is designed to be used for material transfers from lower cleanliness areas to higher cleanliness areas or vice versa in classified areas. It is also known as a hatch box, passive box, cleanroom pass box, static pass box, and dynamic pass box depending on its uses.

Material is moved using pass boxes for sterilization and incubation in the microbiological lab and mixing, granulation, or sterilization in the production area. In sterile manufacturing facilities, pass boxes are occasionally used for the transfer of equipment parts.

There are two kinds of pass boxes:

An airlock or laminar air flow unit functions similarly to a dynamic pass box. Contamination cannot enter the pass box since clean air is able to enter. Similar to the airlocks seen in pharmacies, dynamic pass boxes can be of the Sink, Cascade, or Bubble types.

B) Static Pass box: Also referred to as passive pass boxes, static pass boxes are lightweight boxes that are installed in the space between two regions.In order to keep contamination from entering the sterile area, the area with a higher level of cleanliness will also have a higher pressure.

Additionally, pass boxes are equipped with ultraviolet light to eliminate any potential contamination that might enter during material transfer. One should replace it after a thousand hours of burning. Regular cleaning of pass boxes with disinfectants is recommended.

Validation is necessary to ensure that the pass boxes are working efficiently. Exposing the bacterial culture's known population can serve as validation.

When both doors are closed, they are electrified and magnetically secured. To open, simply push the touch screen.

Pass boxes are used to transfer material for blending, granulationor sterilization in the manufacturing area and sterilization & incubation in the microbiology laboratory. In some cases, equipment parts are also transferred through the pass boxes in sterile manufacturing areas.

Pass boxes are of two types -

A) Dynamic Pass box:Dynamic pass box works like an airlock orLaminar Air Flow unit. Clean air enters in the pass box and prevents the entrance of the contamination. Dynamic pass boxes may be Cascade, Sink or Bubble type similar to theairlocks in pharmaceuticals.

B) Static Pass box:Static pass boxes are simple boxes mounted between two areas and also known as passive pass boxes.The areahaving higher cleanliness level shall have the higher pressure that helps to prevent the entrance ofcontaminationin the sterile area.

Ultra-violet lightis also installed in the pass boxes to remove the contamination that may enter during the transfer of material. It should be replaced after 1000 burning hours. Pass boxes should be cleaned withdisinfectantsat regular intervals.

The efficiency of the pass boxesshould be verified by validation. Validation may be done by exposing the known population of the bacterial culture.
